Why Laser Safety Glasses Come in Different Lens Colors

Laser safety glasses are available in many different lens colors, including green, orange, yellow, red, and darker neutral tints. These colors are the result of the filter's optical transmission characteristics.

However, lens color should never be used as the primary method of selecting laser safety eyewear.

A filter's appearance does not directly indicate its optical density. Two glasses with very different colors can provide similar attenuation at one wavelength, while offering completely different protection at another wavelength.

The most important specifications are the wavelength range and optical density rating. These indicate which laser radiation the filter is designed to attenuate and how strongly it attenuates that radiation.

Visible Light Transmission is another useful specification. VLT indicates the amount of visible light transmitted through the lens and can help users understand the effect of the filter on visibility.

Some filters are designed to provide useful color recognition or visibility while still offering substantial attenuation at specific laser wavelengths. This can be valuable for applications involving alignment, inspection, medical procedures, or manufacturing.

The correct approach is to identify the laser wavelength first and then select eyewear with documented protection for that wavelength and appropriate OD.

Lens color can help identify a filter, but it should never replace checking the technical specifications.
