Optical Density Explained | Laser Safety Glasses Guide

Optical Density, commonly referred to as OD, is one of the most important specifications to understand when selecting laser safety glasses. The OD rating indicates how effectively an optical filter attenuates laser radiation at a specified wavelength.

The higher the OD rating, the greater the attenuation provided by the filter. However, a higher OD number does not automatically mean that a pair of laser safety glasses is suitable for every laser.

OD ratings are wavelength-specific. For example, a filter may provide OD 7 protection at 1064nm while offering a different level of protection at another wavelength. This is why the wavelength range and OD rating should always be considered together.

Laser users should identify the wavelength produced by their laser system and compare it with the specifications marked on the eyewear. Laser power, operating conditions, and the applicable safety requirements should also be considered when determining appropriate protection.

Understanding OD ratings makes it easier to interpret laser safety eyewear specifications and select protection appropriate for the intended application.
