Laser Safety Glasses vs Standard Safety Glasses

Regular safety glasses are designed to protect against mechanical hazards such as debris, dust, or chemical splashes. Laser safety glasses serve a different purpose—they are designed to attenuate laser radiation.

Laser eyewear contains specialised optical filters that reduce specific wavelengths produced by laser systems. These filters are tested to confirm optical density ratings and wavelength coverage.

Standard safety glasses typically do not contain these filters and therefore may not provide adequate protection against laser exposure.

Laser safety eyewear also includes technical markings that identify wavelength ranges and performance ratings.

Understanding the differences between these two types of protective eyewear helps ensure appropriate safety equipment is used when lasers are involved.
