Laser Safety Glasses for Laser Welding Systems

Laser welding systems use concentrated laser energy to join materials with high precision. Modern systems may use fiber, diode, or other laser technologies, with the exact wavelength varying between equipment.

Direct and reflected laser radiation can present serious eye hazards. This makes suitable engineering controls and personal protective equipment important components of a laser welding safety program.

The laser wavelength should be confirmed before selecting safety glasses. The eyewear must provide documented protection at that wavelength, with an appropriate optical density for the operating conditions.

Laser welding can also generate intense visible radiation and other workplace hazards. Laser safety glasses should therefore be considered alongside the other protective equipment required for the welding process.

Enclosed and automated systems may reduce the opportunity for personnel to access hazardous radiation. Where workers can still be exposed during setup, maintenance, alignment, or operation, suitable laser protection may be necessary.

It is important not to select eyewear solely from the description of the welding machine. Fiber laser welding systems, for example, can operate at different wavelengths and power levels, resulting in different protection requirements.

The laser specifications should always be checked against the eyewear specifications before use. Correctly selected laser safety glasses provide an additional protective layer while engineering controls and safe operating procedures address the wider hazard.
