Laser Safety Glasses for Industrial Lasers | Safety Guide

Industrial laser systems are used for cutting, welding, engraving, marking, cleaning, drilling, and material processing. Because these applications can involve high levels of concentrated optical energy, appropriate laser safety controls are essential.

Laser safety glasses can provide an additional layer of eye protection when exposure to accessible laser radiation remains possible. However, the correct eyewear must be selected for the specific laser system.

The first specification to identify is the laser wavelength. Industrial lasers can operate across ultraviolet, visible, and infrared wavelengths, and protective filters are designed to attenuate specific portions of the spectrum.

Optical Density (OD) is another critical specification. The appropriate OD depends on the laser wavelength, output characteristics, beam conditions, and potential exposure. A higher OD rating is not automatically appropriate for every application.

Frame design should also be considered. Wraparound frames may provide additional coverage, while fit-over designs can accommodate many prescription glasses.

For high-power industrial lasers, protective eyewear should never be considered a replacement for engineering controls. Enclosures, interlocks, beam stops, controlled access, warning signs, and appropriate operating procedures are important components of laser safety.

When selecting industrial laser safety glasses, compare the complete wavelength and OD specifications with the laser manufacturer's information. Choosing eyewear based only on the application or lens appearance can result in inadequate protection.
