Selecting the right laser safety glasses begins with understanding the laser system being used. The most important factor is the laser wavelength, as laser safety filters are designed to attenuate specific wavelength ranges.

The first step is identifying the wavelength of the laser. Common examples include 532nm green lasers, 755nm Alexandrite lasers, 810nm diode lasers, 1064nm Nd:YAG lasers, and 10,600nm CO₂ lasers. Once the wavelength is known, users can select eyewear designed to provide protection at that wavelength.

Optical Density (OD) is another important consideration. OD ratings indicate how much laser radiation is attenuated by the filter. Higher-powered lasers generally require higher levels of attenuation.

Visible Light Transmission (VLT) may also influence eyewear selection. VLT measures how much visible light passes through the lens and affects overall brightness during use.
